Older adults are more likely to develop shingles than younger people for a number of reasons. First, the immune system weakens with age, making it less able to fight off the virus that causes shingles. Second, older adults are more likely to have chronic medical conditions that can also weaken the immune system.
And finally, older adults are more likely to be taking medications that can suppress the immune system. The good news is that there is a vaccine that can help to prevent shingles in older adults. The vaccine is not 100% effective, but it can reduce the risk of developing shingles by about 50%.
