Shingles is a virus that can cause a painful rash. The virus, called the varicella-zoster virus, is the same virus that causes chickenpox. After someone has chickenpox, the virus lies dormant in their nervous system. The virus can later reactivate and cause shingles. Shingles usually affects people over the age of 50. It can also be more severe in people with weakened immune systems.
Shingles treatment Parkland generally focuses on relieving pain and preventing complications. Antiviral drugs may be prescribed to shorten the duration of the illness. Laser therapy may also be used to help relieve pain. In some cases, corticosteroids may be prescribed to reduce inflammation. Early diagnosis and treatment is important for preventing serious complications from shingles.
