A recurrent shingle is a medical condition whereby one or more episodes of shingles have been experienced. It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which also causes chickenpox. Once an individual has contracted this virus, it will stay dormant in their body but may become reactivated due to a weakened immune system later. This can cause recurring bouts of shingles.
Other factors such as medications, stress, alcohol use, and family history can increase the risk of recurrent shingles. It's essential to seek immediate medical attention if one experiences symptoms related to recurrent shingles, as the antiviral medication is necessary to lessen the severity of an episode.
