Who are Commonly Affected by Peripheral Neuropathy

If you've ever had a charley horse, you know that your peripheral nerves are important. These nerves transmit information from the brain to the muscles, telling them when to contract. Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that occurs when these nerves are damaged. The most common symptoms include numbness, tingling, and pain.

Peripheral neuropathy can be caused by a variety of factors, including diabetes, alcohol abuse, and certain medications. People with diabetes are especially at risk, as high blood sugar levels can damage the nerves over time. Treatment for peripheral neuropathy typically focuses on managing pain and other symptoms. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to correct the underlying cause of the nerve damage. Regardless of the treatment plan, it's important to see a doctor if you notice any changes in sensation in your extremities.
