Bell's palsy is a type of paralysis that affects the muscles on one side of your face. The cause is unknown, but it's believed to be related to nerve damage. This can be caused by a viral infection, such as the common cold, or by trauma to the facial nerve. The paralysis usually starts abruptly and worsens over 48 hours. Symptoms include drooping of the eyelid, drooling, difficulty eating and drinking, and paralysis of facial muscles.
The paralysis can make it difficult to blink, smile or close your eye on the affected side. Bell's palsy usually resolves itself within 2-3 weeks, but some people may have permanent muscle weakness or paralysis. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should see a doctor so they can rule out other causes, such as a stroke. Early diagnosis and bells palsy treatment Parkland is important to prevent long-term complications.
