Understanding Lumbar Discectomy Surgery:
Reasons and Procedure

Lumbar discectomy surgery is performed to address symptoms caused by a herniated or degenerated disc in the lower back. It is done for the following reasons:

The surgical procedure involves making a small incision in the lower back, through which the surgeon accesses the affected disc. The damaged portion of the disc is then removed, relieving pressure on the nerves. In some cases, the surgeon may also perform a spinal fusion to stabilize the spine. This procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia, and patients may require a short hospital stay for recovery.
